This fungus is often found in areas of the body that are moist and/or humid, such as in the intestines, vagina, or areas of mucous membranes such as the mouth or on damp skin. This infection is also commonly called and/or known as Thrush or Moniliasis. Thrush is a fungal infection, typically concentrated in the area of the mouth or vagina. Moniliasis is an infection caused by fungi of the genus Monilia Candida Albicans is the specific name for a strain of normally peaceful, yeast-like fungus that naturally exist in limited amounts inside our digestive tract; which extends end-to-end from our mouth to our rectum.
Ideally, Candida Albicans are a harmless parasite that manifests in small colonies while coexisting with beneficial microbes or bacteria. The presence of yeast in a controlled balance does not cause any problems. Its primary function is to recognize and destroy harmful bacteria that invade our body. In a thriving individual, millions to perhaps billions of Candida Albicans may exist; to be kept in check by a properly functioning immune system and an equally balanced and harmonious collection of friendly (floral) bacteria.
However, if the number of harmonious bacteria is decreased, the immune system is weakened and other conditions that enable yeast proliferation can occur. Consequently Candida Albicans will shift from yeast to a mycelial, tenacious form (branch like) and begin invading the entire body. This phenomenon is called Candidiasis. Perhaps the most difficult is that Candida Albicans is a pleomorphic fungi, meaning that it has the ability to change its form to survive. Just as bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics, yeast can become resistant to antifungals.
Candidiasis is the condition that develops from an overgrowth of Candida Albicans. It has been reported that everybody has a certain normal level of this fungus, typically found in the digestive system (intestines). A healthy level of candida albicans is kept in check by friendly floral bacteria in the intestines, such as Lactobacillus sporogenes, bacillus subtills or streptococcus faecalis
